| Panasonic SD600 with iMac and iMovie11

Hello dear members!
I bought a Panasonic SD600 in the summer. After I had filmed a lot (1080/50p) and I have bought a new iMac i3, I wanted to cut and transferred everything.
So iMovie recognizes the Cam and I can not import anything. I realize that the AVCHD files must first be converted. I thought that iMovie does for me.
So I tried to convert with a conversion program in the MTS files. MOV. However, it remains the quality of nothing left.
General:
Surely it can not be so heavy that you can edit everything with iMovie. What do all the lay people who buy at Saturn ne fat Cam home and notice that they will never be able to edit all or understand.
I hope you can show me a simple way.
