DVL-Digest 1413 - Postings: Index Suggestions for Really Bad Head Clogs? Suggestions for Really Bad Head Clogs? - Mitchell Gass After years of using only Sony DV tapes in a Sony DHR-1000 VCR, I got some Panasonic MiniDV tapes for a project. I was aware of the problems of mixing different brands of tape, and I cleaned the heads with a Sony dry cleaning tape beforehand. While viewing the Panasonic tapes, I cleaned the heads again for 6-10 seconds at any sign of head clogging (pixilated video, stuttering audio), which happened every 30 minutes or so of playing time. Everything seemed fine. At one point, however, the VCR was unable to play the tapes at all. The video jumped, and the audio became a series of quick bleats. Multiple cleanings with the Sony cleaning tape didn't solve the problem. My first thought was that I'd finally worn out the heads with all the cleaning, and I tried a backup DHR-1000. I immediately had the same problem, and then the same problem again in yet another VCR (a Sony DSR50) with only about 300 hours on the heads. All of these had used only Sony tapes previously. But in a new Sony camcorder, the tapes still play. Is there anything else I can do, short of bringing the VCRs in for service and getting the heads replaced if necessary? - Is there any kind of wet cleaner or cleaning technique that would be worth a try? - Would a Panasonic cleaning tape do anything that a Sony cleaning tape doesn't? - Would the large--and more expensive--DVCAM cleaning tapes do anything that small cleaning tapes don't? (I've assumed that the tape path is the same for both large and small tapes, and that a MiniDV-size cleaning tape would be all that's necessary. Is this correct?) I will, of course, be more than annoyed if it turns out the only solution is replacing the heads. I would be like I'd used Chevron gas in my car and then have to get my engine overhauled after using Shell. If the tapes are as grossly incompatible with each other as they seem, should they even be allowed to have the same MiniDV label?
