DVL-Digest 1878 - Postings: Index Latest update on my switch to Macs & FCP - (2) - (3) Latest update on my switch to Macs & FCP - "Don Mitchell" We haven't heard much from Randy himself. His post resonated with me, but not because of any PC/Mac business. I've been in his situation several time, but not with video. I've had new stuff -- both hardware and software -- nearly ready to go, for important events, and at the last moment dropped them and gone back to the known-to-work (but not as cool, or as easy and fast as the new way would be, if it just would work right...) equipment and software and procedures. So I didn't find it surprising at all. I didn't read it as "to hell with Apple." He's told us that he's under enormous pressure to crank out video, and that he hoped that Mac/FCP would speed up his workflow so he could keep up. Well, for various reasons it didn't work out like that, and so he did what any sensible person would -- quickly went back to the "known-to-work" mode of operation. Surely he wants to keep his job, and his superiors probably don't care at all how he gets it done. Jeez, haven't we all done that? You hope the new way will be great, but you've got to have your fallback onto the old way all planned. It doesn't sound to me as though Randy has any significant down time during which to experiment and get the kinks out. My business partner does track, but I only do road races. > In track you might have a dozen people in a single event, or maybe a few more than that . . . in the kind of thing I'm talking about, you have thousands (those 38 thousand, for example) in a SINGLE event -- they're all competing simultaneously, and, for example, cross the finish line at rates as high as 300 per minute. Three hundred runners running across your line each minute...and you have to get times and places for them. Very different animal. Occasionally we bring in timing cameras ("Finish Lynx") when there's a lot of money at stake. They are used as backup, not as primary devices (as they would be in track). Any of you out there who are interested, check out the automatic timing system I'm using now www.championchip.com and for a description of the traditional road race method www.run-time.com/how.html I'll stop now, because, really, this is off topic. But thanks, Danny, for the link. Let a thousand flowers bloom!
