They are readily available, and cheap in packs of 5 etc. retail, but
they *are* labelled PAL. Whether this is a marketing thing and goes with
a simple plastic tag ID on the tape case or whether the there is an
formatting difference I can't say.

Not only does the KDDI (JVC) NLE work -- it even runs under Virtual PC
on a Mac.
Why these computer pros couldn't get it running is very strange.
I don't think it's a matter of what I like. The Sony is clearly not
accurate, while I'd bet the JVC was spot on. If I want a warm "look"
I'll do it in post. But Sony has biased too warm in the past -- usually
on the INDOOR setting. And, the VX1000's red was way out of spec. Looks
like the world wants pleasing pictures. Which may be the right
marketing decision for Sony. After all, a warm wedding is going to be
better received.
