Components on DV - Perry Mitchell

Since my attempts at irony usually fail miserably, I'll be perfectly
straight:
DV is a component video system and using composite and/or Y/C to monitor or
transfer video is ridiculous. It is like a rich man buying a Lear Jet and a
Sunseeker, and then transferring from one to the other on an oily old
motorcycle. Ideally we should have a complete Firewire system (including
monitors) but second best and a good interface with the broadcast world is
analog components.
There is absolutely no excuse for missing these off all DV devices but
especially decks; they are not expensive, they are not difficult
technically, and there is usually plenty of room for connectors.
The only reason that makes sense is marketing bloody mindedness from some
manufacturers and a belief that they can get away with it because most
customers won't know any better.

I have received some guidance from JVC Japan.
Apparently the camera records locked audio in 48k mode, but unlocked in 32k
mode. Since there is no access to ch3/4 there is no benefits to recording
in 32k mode, so the 'problem' is purely hypothetical. So to reiterate:
1) use 32k if you want a consumer style recording, or want to add a ch3/4
dub later (is there a deck that allows this?)
2) use 48k if you want a DVCAM type locked audio.
The camera allows you to monitor the audio condition on the side display,
with indicators for both 32/48k and locked/unlocked.
Seems to me that this is a pretty good and well thought out compromise.
However, since locked audio is a 'subset' of unlocked, I can only imagine
that the unlocked 32k was a hardware restriction, or maybe as I surmised, it
is actually locked but the flag is not set. Actually, to be honest I don't
know whether it is possible to get locked samples to fit video frames if you
use 32k samples (if you have the data handy, the number of 48k samples per
frame would need to be divisible by 2/3 to give a whole number).
I still don't know whether the camera sets/unsets the locked flag for the
two conditions. Perhaps somebody with access to a DV-500 and a DVCAM deck
could give it a try with 32k/48k recording and see what happens to the DVCAM
'NS Audio' light.
