DVL-Digest 479 - Postings: Index Betamax Sony has planted a bitter pill into DSR-40 Betamax - "Perry" >Being number one and offering quality don't always have much to do with >one another. I'd use betamax over VHS anyday, if only there where people >with betamax VCR's! just for the record, I still use a Betamax deck pretty regularly for off-air time delay. I am working through a stack of used (non SP) Betacam tapes which work fine. It has the great advantage that my kids don't pinch the tapes (and over-record my programmes) to use on their vhs decks. Perry Mitchell Video Facilities http://www.perrybits.co.uk/ Sony has planted a bitter pill into DSR-40 - Perry Mitchell I am not defending Sony or the DSR-40 come to that, but the following may be relevant: When a deck is put into assemble edit record over RS-422 by an edit controller, the actual 'edit' is made by the deck. The remote is saying to the deck: 'please make an assemble edit on the next frame' (or in practice after a certain number of frames). The bottom line is thus that this function can only work if the deck is equipped with an internal editor. A insert edit is even more specific since then the deck must be equipped with a flying erase head. AFAIK the DSR-40 does not have a built in editor, whereas for instance the DSR-80 does. In a similar way, the deck must be equipped with a capstan servo that allows a speed override under RS-422 in order that frame accurate edits can be attempted by the controller. The 'manual record' function on many edit controllers is a crash record without any attempt at making an edit at a certain point, and this should work with any recorder including the DSR-40.
