DVL-Digest 591 - Postings: Index SDI Clarification SDI Clarification - "Perry" The recent SDI discussion highlights a wider point that is often forgotten. Interface protocols are rarely created from nothing by a committee, but are derived from existing systems as developed by a particular manufacturer. That manufacturer may actively seek recognition of their interface system, either to make money from selling licences or to use the advantages of the system to help promote the wider cause. SDI was very instrumental in promoting the complete digitisation of television studios. The fact that the SDI facility added to say a DVCPRO deck works with the earlier implemented Sony version, even though it was not then standardised by any committee, proves the power of sensible acceptance of market forces (and probably a bit of back room co-operation!) It is what is known in the trade as a >De-Facto Standard<. A classic case is the RS-422 protocol used to control studio decks; Sony invented it, put it on all their broadcast VTRs and Edit Controllers, and their dominant position of the marketplace did the rest. The protocol was available as a 'free issue' to relevant parties which obviously helped. There are of course many cases where the developer changed their minds about exploiting their property; LZW compression and the mess over Firewire licences come immediately to mind. Customers can be wary of manufacturers with dominant market share, and obviously prefer formats to be standardised for widespread exploitation. Imagine DVCam without the DV marketplace and you'll soon see the difference. Indeed, DVCPRO has suffered greatly as a result of not being able to share with DV resources, especially in PAL, and it is interesting that the new Panasonic professional cameras just announced are DV and not DVCPRO.
