DVL-Digest 641 - Postings: Index BBC News BBC News - "Perry" Steve Mullen asked: (On the subject: I notice the new BBC Breakfast News has gone 14:9!) >BBC News on American TV is 14:9. Are you saying the studio is 4:3 which is altered to 14:9 -- or that the studio uses 16:9 and that this is altered 14:9? If the latter, is the 16:9 version available on another channel?< Actually, I've now noticed that ALL the BBC News bulletins have gone to 14:9, so I'm guessing they're producing in 16:9. The Breakfast News closed down during the Olympics and then reopened with a new set, so I had assumed they had changed because of that. 14:9 letterboxing is pretty subtle and easy to miss if you are not looking for it. I'm pretty sure there isn't a 16:9 version actually transmitted, although the BBC main outputs are also carried by some of the digital satellite broadcasters so there is potential for a 16:9 version. The UK is heading for an analog switch off sooner than anybody imagined, even if it means giving away the necessary digital tuners. They are already free if you sign up for pay channels. I am sure the industry would like to go on air at that time 100% 16:9, and in effect they are softening up the public to accept letterboxed images. I am sure the 14:9 will change to 15:9 before too long! Remember the UK viewing public are renowned as hating letterboxed images, much of Europe happily broadcast full 16:9 letterbox already.
