VITC is recorded in the blanking part of the picture, that is removed before
it is coded for DV. So the simple answer is no. The better professional
decks will allow use of an existing timecode on either VITC or a separate
linear track (LTC). Normally it is used to preset the recorder's timecode
generator to get a new clean timecode. The numbers will be the same as long
as there are no breaks in the original. There is also a mode called 'Regen'
which preserves the original numbers.
