The XLR are permanently connected to the small and fragile mini jacks. Don't know exactly what S/PDIF is (I thought digital pro connection) and if the same is possible with it.< S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) is the proper name for the digital interface on most consumer/industrial audio kit. In effect it is an unbalanced AES/EBU port. It can come as either an electrical signal on an RCA Phono socket, or via an optical port. I have the original Sony portable MiniDisk which has both input and output (optical) but the present ones and all the competition that I have seen now have output only. I use a portable DAT machine via S/PDIF and an old AudiomediaII board on a NuBus Mac, only problem is no support for timecode so I have to 'beep' a reference start. I used it mostly for bringing out voice-over recordings from pro studios, but I mostly get them burned to a CD now. I still use it occasionally. Others may argue about ATRAC quality but It's perfectly adequate for anything I send to video, which is what this List is all about! I know of the HHB machine, and can remember many splendid evenings entertainment from their officers, but I'm afraid + is a bit rich for my occasional use!
