TBC enquiry
The (other) Idiots
tone level redux

TBC enquiry - Adam Wilt

Quick enquiry to ask if anyone at the List can recommend a time base
> corrector, or a switcher (S-Video, if possible, component I/O also) that
> includes TBC.
You don't say exacty what features you need so it's hard to recommend a unit.
Look for a DPS-295 or an old I.DEN IVT9PLUS. The 295 has the cleanest and best
looking pix I've seen from a S-Video source and has built-in test pattern
generation, but it may not have component. The I.DEN is the most tweakable
multiformat TBC I've used.
The new DPS-475 and 575 are superb TBCs with anything in, anything out
(including DV over 1394) and the TPG built in, but they aren't cheap.
4-input S-Video switcher/SEGs with built-in frame syncs include the Panasonic
WJ-MX50 and its brethren, and the Videonics MXPro and MXProDV. Bob Rall adds
proc-amp controls to the MX50 and improves its performance in myriad other
ways, selling it as the "Pro-Fifty". The MXProDV adds two 1394 inputs. Of the
bunch, I find the MX50 the better choice for traditional, button-mashing,
T-bar-pulling live production. None of these units have component.

The (other) Idiots - Adam Wilt

Grrr...did I mention how much I'm beginning to hate all entertainment
> companies for their ancient and stupid views on digital works? I've got
> all this money in my pocket that I'm willing to give them but they won't
> give me anything I want.
Well, that's YOUR fault: you should want what they want to give you.
What you don't realize is that the Entertainment Industry is only doing this
in your best interest -- DCMA, 5C, CPRM, Region Coding, etc. are all there for
YOUR protection. The world is filled with nasty people: Europeans who want to
watch DVDs before American media companies want them to, evil pirates, and
worst of all, unauthorized creators of content! Some subversive artists cater
to niche markets with unsettling, controversial or thought-provoking material;
such work can make you moody and depressed, or even turn you away from
materialist, consumerist aspirations. This is morally wrong because it's bad
for business.
Please, stop worrying. Watch Disney and Spielberg and summer action flix;
listen to Madonna and Kenny G and Britney Spears. Buy only Big Media products,
consume Big Media products, and be happy: rest assured knowing that the studio
execs are eternally vigilant, making the safe, moral, artistic, and business
choices guaranteed to optimize your entertainment experience. Everything is
under control.
Grrrr,
Adam Wilt

I'm sure we should all be as happy as Kings.
And you know how happy Kings are."

tone level redux - Adam Wilt

I add: with all of the DVCPRO camcorders, tone is set at -20. My
> feeling is the -12 setting wouldn't give you enough head room.
Most pros would agree. The nominal default in North America for professional
digital recording is -20dBfs, while the BBC has chosen -18dBfs.
FWIW, most consumer digital gear is leveled at -12dBfs. Indeed, when I level
tone at -12 in FCP or Premiere, send it to a DV camcorder or VTR, and take the
analog outputs into my WJ-MX50 SEG, its meters read 0dB.
Some DVCAM gear like the DSR-500 allows the selection of -12 or -20 in the
menus for recording tone. In PAL versions, it's -12 or -18, of course.
Cheers,
Adam Wilt
