DV squared, the Universe and everything!
Interlace conundrum
Premiere on Mac

DV squared, the Universe and everything! - "Perry"

I've just acquired a Digital Voodoo/FCP system and I'm trying it out, seeing
how fast it'll motor! Now FCP is entirely new to me so I'm testing the water
with a few simple projects.
First up, I want to edit some material off DigiBeta and send it to DV. The
capture produces Voodoo D1 files which are Upper field first (PAL) and 0-255
colorspace. Apple DV is Lower field first and 16-235 colorspace. So the
question is what is the most efficient method of doing this with FCP?
I know how to do it with After Effects, both the official method and the
workaround to stop the picture going soggy. I guess therefore I'm
pre-disposed to think it won't be a simple process.
I'm talking to my new friends over at 2-pop but I thought some of you guys
might be into this stuff?
cheers
Perry Mitchell

Interlace conundrum - "Perry"

OK this is kind of a funky question: I make a dub of a VHS tape (I believe
they are upper field dominant.) to a mini-DV tape (lower field dominant)
What happens to the interlaced frame? Which field is now dominant? When I
input it into the computer to edit via fire wire. Do I choose lower field
dominant in Project preferences? Does this cause any problems? How about
when the material is de-interlaced?

Premiere on Mac - Adam Wilt

The EditDV (now CineStream) system has a very neat 'LiveDV' method of

Premiere 6 can do this quite nicely (at least on the PC, and I can't see why
the Mac wouldn't be just as good, especially as QuickTime's support for DV has
been around for longer than Microsoft's). For that matter I could preview out
DV using 5.1 and the DPS Spark, too, as long as I didn't mind the occassional
crash whilst scrubbing (the fault of the Spark's wonky DV drivers, not of
Premiere itself).
> ...Fast (Purple/Silver/Blue)...
Don't forget Ivory!
It's OK now, but give us another ten years of format wars (IMX, microMV,
D-9HD, DVCPROHD, etc.) and we'll have some real problems: FAST puce, FAST
fuschia, FAST burnt umber, FAST harvest gold...
> To me it is like comparing a VW and a Porche...
Would that be the front Porche, or the back Porche? (Sorry, it was such an
easy "setup"... don't "burst" with anger, I don't want to raise your IRE...)
Cheers,
Adam Wilt
