DVL-Digest 782 - Postings: Index DV software codecs Geography! Windows advice DV software codecs - "Perry" Re: generation losses. The first thing to say is that it isn't like analog; you don't get an equal extra loss for each generation. To a first approximation, nearly all the losses happen for the first DV codec pass, which normally happens in the camera of course. If nothing changes, then the next generation will be the same (ie no extra losses) because you can't throw away something twice. In practice DV codecs suffer from secondary artifacts like 'mosquito noise' and often Y/C delays, so that there is a gradual deterioration. Each design of DV codec will be different in this regard. You can see Adam Wilt's site for some comparisons. Also in practice the picture has normally changed, and if it moves or changes levels or adds with another picture (all common in editing effects and transitions) then the losses will be greater. You can still get many generations on a good DV codec without it becoming a serious problem. Bertel clearly stated he was by the Baltic in Germany, where the hell did Switzerland get into the equation! We once got stuck in snow for 4 days, but fortunately it was in a pub car park!!!
