APS-C with stacked sensor: Did Apple accidentally leak a Nikon Z70?

Rumors about a new Nikon Z camera with a DX sensor (meaning APS-C) have notoriously been simmering for a while now. After none other than Apple suddenly listed a Nikon Z70 over the weekend in its list of authorized ProRes RAW products, they have flared up again. Especially because the entry was removed without comment after it was noticed, which points to a premature publication—in other words, a leak.
However, more precise information about the camera is still scarce. The Nikon Rumors website nikonrumors.com/2026/08/09/not-a-typo-apple-removed-the-nikon-z70-listing-from-the-authorized-prores-products.aspx/ claims to have learned that it will be equipped with a 45MP stacked sensor and will be a "very fast" camera. The latter goes hand in hand with the stacked sensor design; we already speculated at the beginning of the year that fast-reading stacked APS-C / S35 sensors with correspondingly capable autofocus systems could bring a lot of potential to this camera segment. Especially in the sports or wildlife segment, where long focal lengths are in demand, such models could score points in both the photo and video sectors. After all, due to the crop factor, every full-frame lens behaves roughly 1.5x more telephoto on an APS-C camera.
Nikon Z50II with DX sensor
Since the DX camera Z50(II) with a resolution of 20.9MP is numerically quite close to the full-frame Z5(II) with its 24.5MP, the alleged 45MP of the leaked (?) Z70 fit well into the picture; the now somewhat older Z7(II) has 45.7MP.
A Nikon Z70 can probably be expected this fall; in any case, it appears that ProRes RAW recording has already been licensed by Apple—provided all of this turns out to be true.
