Apple Creator Studio: Major (AI) Update for Final Cut Pro 12.3 - Auto Captions, Auto Mask, and more

[12:16 Wed,1.July 2026   by blip]

Final Cut Pro has received a major update on both Mac and iPad. The additions primarily include new AI tools, such as automatic captioning and the ability to break an already rendered clip back into individual sequences (Edit Detection). There are also new Creator Themes with support for multiple aspect ratios, dynamic titles, and customizable backgrounds. On the Mac, users also gain additional tools like Auto Mask, an improved Match Color, Advanced Trimming, and the ability to send individual frames to Pixelmator Pro.

Captions and Edit Detection

With the new "Generate Captions" feature, Apple is catching up with the competition, enabling automatic transcription of spoken audio (currently only in English) and the precise placement of the resulting captions on the timeline. The calculations for this are performed locally on the user's device; this requires macOS 15.6 or later with Apple silicon, or iPadOS 18.6 or later with at least an Apple M1 chip. Editors have flexible options for styling the captions (font, color, position, and animation).

"Edit Detection" is also based on on-device AI. This new feature analyzes rendered video and automatically splits it back into the original clips on the timeline. This allows editors to re-enter the edit to refine it or quickly create a shortened highlight version for social media without having to manually identify previous cut points.

Automatic Masks

The Mac version features new masking capabilities. With "Auto Mask," specific elements in the footage can be automatically isolated and refined. The on-device AI is designed to recognize subjects such as skin, hair, sky, foliage, and clothing without the need for manual tracking. Hovering the mouse cursor over a clip displays a live preview of what has been detected. Alternatively, users can select from a list in the Inspector. The mask can be seamlessly combined with any color correction or effect to make precise adjustments. Auto Mask works hand-in-hand with Magnetic Mask, which gives editors full control over exactly what should be identified, tracked, and masked.

Also on the Mac, a redesigned Match Color is intended to deliver more accurate and natural color adjustments across a wider range of footage and lighting conditions. Editors select a reference image, and Final Cut Pro analyzes the shots to harmonize them—with the option to further refine the result if needed. Advanced Trimming also allows for precise readjustment of individual incoming and outgoing frames.

New in Motion and Compressor

Motion and Compressor have also received updates. Motion now offers native support for rendering vector graphics sharply at any resolution, as well as "Distribute Layers" for significantly faster setup of complex animations. Compressor introduces an Immersive Metadata Viewer, support for the 180-degree Apple Projected Media Profile for Apple Vision Pro, and an Anaglyph View for previewing stereoscopic videos.
(Incidentally, Logic Pro for Mac and iPad has also been updated.)

Pixelmator Pro Omnipresent

New integrations with Pixelmator Pro are available to users within Apple Creator Studio. For example, a selected individual frame can be sent directly from Final Cut Pro to Pixelmator Pro to create custom thumbnails or social media graphics, with the content then easily imported back into the timeline. In Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, users can select any image within a document, open it directly in Pixelmator Pro, and edit it using the full toolset. Changes are automatically saved back into the document, and users can return to Pixelmator Pro at any time to further refine their graphic.

In Pixelmator Pro, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, vector shapes can now also be easily generated to suit any project. Users can customize these shapes as desired; they are then saved in a dedicated collection for later use. Advanced image generation and the Content Hub are also being expanded to Pixelmator Pro. With image generation, users can create and edit images using natural language. In the Content Hub, they can also browse a curated collection of high-quality photos, graphics, shapes, and illustrations.

Apple Creator Studio updates are available starting today as a free update for existing subscribers; the subscription costs 12.99 euros per month or 129 euros per year. All new subscribers receive a one-month free trial of Apple Creator Studio. When purchasing a new Mac or a qualifying iPad, customers receive three months of free access to Apple Creator Studio.
