Asus: Neue 16

Asus: Neue 16

[18:25 Sun,8.January 2023   by ]

Asus has presented a whole range of new notebooks at CES 2023 - two of them, the ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED and the Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED, which are aimed at creatives, have a very special feature, namely the possibility of displaying 3D images via their special displays without the need for 3D glasses for the spatial effect. This is made possible by a microscopic layer of lenticular lenses integrated into the display, a technique that is also used, for example, by the holographic displays from Looking Glass.

Lenticular 3D - but without the drawbacks

.
However, Asus claims to have improved this classic technology for glasses-free 3D even further. Thus, the additional 3D layer should not affect the properties of the display in 2D mode and thus provide the full quality (and resolution) of the OLED displays used, which would correspond to a significant improvement over classic lenticular displays. Thanks to the real-time eye-tracking technology used by ASUS Spatial Vision, the 3D effect is also supposed to automatically adapt to the respective perspective of the viewer and thus not only avoid the otherwise usual erratic perspective changes of the displayed images when the user&s position changes, but also always adapt the 3D effect exactly to the user&s viewing angle. Asus does not explicitly say so, but the technology probably only works for one person in front of the screen because of the 3D adjusted via eye tracking.

Additionally, the high quality of the OLED display on which the technology is based (such as low response time, 120 Hz refresh rate and high contrast) is supposed to ensure low differences between the left and right stereo image and thus optimize the 3D display.

Asus is targeting professional filmmakers, photographers, architects, game developers, 3D animators and product designers who want to view their work in three dimensions with the 16" 3D displays of the ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED and the Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED. ASUS Spatial Vision supports three-dimensional rendering via Unreal Engine, NVIDIA CloudXR, Unity and SteamVR, among others, as well as more than 12 popular 3D modeling tools, such as Blender, Omniverse Create XR and Autodesk VRED. In addition, more than 10 file formats are supported, by means of which objects can be displayed in 3D and integrated into one&s own workflow.

The ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED offers very high performance with an Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU with 24 cores (8 performance and 16 efficiency cores), a mobile NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU (including NVIDIA Studio driver), and up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM equipped and offers up to 8 TB of storage via fast SSDs connected via PCIe 4.0. The ASUS IceCool Pro cooling system allows for a combined TDP of 150W between CPU and GPU (65W+85W) in performance mode under full load. Interfaces include Thunderbolt 4, which offers 100W USB power delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode, as well as HDMI 2.1, SD Express 7.0, two USB Type-A ports, and Gigabit Ethernet.

The 16:10 OLED display is factory calibrated, Pantone-validated and Calman-verified, and not only supports 3D display via ASUS Spatial Vision but also offers 3.2K (3,200 x 2,000) resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It covers the professional DCI-P3 color space at 100% and also offers HDR display via Dolby Vision.

Special features of the ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED include the integrated ASUS Dial, a rotary wheel for quick, intuitive control of the most frequently used functions in creative, productivity, and entertainment apps, and an integrated FHD IR AI camera for biometric login to Windows. The updated touchpad can also be operated via stylus and therefore has the same aspect ratio as the display.

Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED

The Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED also targets creatives and can be equipped with an Intel CPU up to Core i9-13980HX with 24 cores (8 performance and 16 efficiency cores), an NVIDIA GPU up to GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU, and up to 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and reaches a TDP of up to 150W in power mode.

Its 16:10 OLED display is also factory calibrated, Pantone-validated and Calman-verified, and not only supports 3D display via ASUS Spatial Vision but also offers a resolution of 3.2K (3,200 x 2,000) in 2D mode and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It also covers the professional DCI-P3 color space at 100% and also offers HDR display via Dolby Vision.

The interfaces of the Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED include two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and an HDMI 2.1 port that supports Fixed Rate Link (FRL) for higher uncompressed resolutions. Furthermore, an SD card reader is on board to read memory cards from cameras, for example. In contrast to the StudioBook, the ASUS DialPad is integrated into the touchpad of the Vivobook Pro 16X OLED and not separately, but it can also be used for precise control of parameters in various creative apps.

Asus has not yet announced the price or release date of the ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED and Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED.
