Blackmagic Design: New converters, 8K deck link card and Micro Camera Updates[14:16 wed,15.November 2017 by Rudi Schmidts]
Blackmagic Design has launched a few new products, lowered some prices and updated its micro-cameras (Cinema and 4K) with a firmware update:
The new Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 6G and Mini Converter HDMI to SDI 6G models convert from SDI to HDMI or HDMI to SDI in all formats up to 2160p/30 - at relatively moderate prices (195/155 Euro). The Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 6G supports HDMI Instant Lock, 33-point 3D LUT support and HD to Ultra HD upconversion.
HDMI Instant Lock synchronizes with a new signal within a single frame. This allows you to switch between sources with the same video format without interruption. Support for 33-point 3D 3D LUTs allows you to add high-precision, movie-quality look-up tables to your video image. The new converters inherit all the features of the Mini Converter family, including separate connections for balanced analog or AES/EBU digital audio, redundant SDI inputs for standby in the event of damaged cables, and automatic switching between SD, HD and Ultra-HD video standards.
The smallest micro converters are not new. They convert "only" SDI 3G/HDMI and back with up to 1080p/60, but above all the new price for many applications should be exciting. From 45 Euro to 65 Euro the mini-cases (76.5mm x 45.8mm x 24.8mm) cost from now on.
The new DeckLink 8K Pro, on the other hand, is diametrically fit for the future. It supports four 12G SDI ports as an 8 Lane PCI card. This supports numerous frame sizes in SD, HD, Ultra HD, 4K, 8K and 8K DCI. The DeckLink 8K Pro works with 8- and 10-bit YUV at 4:2:2 as well as 10 and 12-bit RGB at 4:4:4:4 with full support for Rec. 2020.8K formats are also possible with up to 60 frames per second and up to 64 sound channels. Since the 16G jacks are bidirectional, the card can be used for capturing and playback. According to the data sheet, a simultaneous mixed operation with single or dual-link SDI connections seems to be possible.
And with the firmware update Blackmagic Camera Setup 4.7 the micro cameras get some new features this time.
The Micro Studio Camera 4K gets a few smaller, but common broadcast formats (720p50,720p59.94 and 720p60). In addition to further innovations for broadcast applications (including new gain settings, PTZ/VISCA support), there are also two very "cinematic" news: Firstly, the sensor sensitivity of the Micro Studio Camera 4K is supposed to have been increased by two (!!!) f-stops. And secondly, there is now an unspecified RAW SDI output feature.
The new features for the Micro Cinema Camera are not so exciting, but certainly interesting for many users (e. g. Record Start/Stop Trigger at the HDMI output for external recorders and HDMI timecode output).
