Camera becomes a drone: The flying pocket gimbal camera - HoverAIR VERSA

[13:28 Fri,31.July 2026 by Thomas Richter]

HOVERAir was previously only known as a manufacturer of small X1 selfie drones – now, it is presenting the VERSA, a clever new pocket camera that can also be easily used as a drone, thereby greatly expanding footage with exciting new aerial perspectives. It also saves on luggage and effort: the new pocket gimbal camera only requires a compact, foldable frame with rotors to take to the air.

HoverAIR has not disclosed the exact technical specifications of the camera or the flight characteristics of the VERSA, but it can be assumed that the camera will feature specs at least similar to the X1 Pro drones. This means capturing 4K video at up to 60 frames per second (fps) or Full HD at up to 120 fps via a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor, or even the even better specs of the X1 Pro Max (8K video at up to 30 fps, 4K at up to 120 fps, and a 4K HDR mode at up to 60 fps in 10-bit HLG). However, it remains questionable whether its flight characteristics will match those of dedicated drones – the pocket camera body is presumably not as optimized for flight as they are.

However, several special features have already been announced with which the VERSA is intended to stand out from the competition, such as AI-supported framing, a high dynamic range, and a special 3D viewing mode for photos. With the VERSA – much like with its X1 drones – HoverAIR is targeting users who primarily want to take selfies.

From Pocket Camera to Selfie Drone

The VERSA transforms from a pocket camera to a selfie drone in no time: according to HoverAIR, the wings (or the drone body complete with rotors) can be attached to the camera with just a single click, turning the handheld camera into an autonomous flying camera that can then be used for selfies, POV shots, intelligent tracking shots, or aerial photography. Just like its previous X1 drones, the VERSA autonomously follows objects using AI tracking and independently creates videos using various intelligent flight and shooting modes.

In addition, the VERSA is designed to intelligently select the respective image framing and camera angle: to do this, a special AI analyzes the environment and suggests a camera position based on it. The algorithm then selects a framing for "a balanced and professional composition." It is thus entirely tailored for action selfies where the drone takes full charge of the camera work.

It will be interesting to see whether the "new standards in dynamic range" announced by HoverAIR for the VERSA will match the 17 stops of the newly unveiled DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. HoverAIR promises that the camera, stabilized in hand and air by a 3-axis gimbal, features "industry-leading camera specifications," but has not revealed any further details yet.

3D Worlds

Brand new is the announced "3D Worlds" function: To achieve this, the VERSA performs a precise 360° flight pattern in its drone form, capturing a scene from all perspectives. It then uses this data to generate a 3D model that the user can subsequently navigate freely.

Innovation Through Competition?

HOVERAir&s innovative product strategy – much like Insta360&s – can be seen as a reaction to the unchallenged market leader DJI&s encroachment on its product lineup: while HoverAIR long had the practically self-created market segment of small selfie drones to itself, that changed two years ago with DJI&s Neo, which brought similar capabilities to the table. With novel concepts like the floatable Aqua drone or the flying pocket camera in the form of the new VERSA, HoverAIR is now responding to the overpowering competition with an innovative concept, creating new products that – for now – are relatively unrivaled in their form factor.

HoverAir has not yet provided any information on when the VERSA will be launched on the market or at what price.
