Canon has announced firmware updates for both its EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless system cameras (firmware v1.4) and EOS-1D X Mark III digital SLR camera (firmware v1.5) that give the cameras new capabilities such as Canon Log 3, dual recording capability to two memory cards, support for CFexpress VPG400 memory cards, and (the R5) external recording of 5K cropped ProRes RAW or 8K RAW.

Canon Log 3
. The Canon EOS R5 had already gotten the ability to record with Canon Log 3 via firmware update 1.3.0 in April, and now it&s the turn of the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III.
Canon&s Log 3 expands the dynamic range and offers more color space options. The logarithmic gamma curve also increases the three models& compatibility with cinema production workflows and makes it easier to color-match shots taken with Canon Cinema EOS series cameras.
. In addition to C-Log 3, the firmware updates enable Dual Card Recording on all three cameras, which means that recording can now be done in parallel on two memory cards, so that you always have an intact backup of the recording ready in case of a possible failure of one memory card. With the R5 it is important to note, however, that not all resolutions and frame rates can be recorded on both cards.
The firmware updates will give the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5 support for CFexpress VPG400 memory cards (such as the SanDisk Professional Pro-Cinema CFexpress VPG400), which guarantee a write speed of 400 MB/s for more reliable recording of 8K or RAW, for example.
Compatibility with products in the EOS Cinema range
. In addition, the firmware update for the R5 expands its compatibility with the CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S and CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S Cine Servo lenses. Users can use the new firmware to control the camera&s focus, exposure and zoom, as well as start shooting through the lenses& record button. This compatibility also extends to Canon EOS Utility and Camera Connect software, allowing the EOS R5 to integrate seamlessly into any workflow.
. In addition, the R5&s new firmware enables external recording of 5K cropped ProRes RAW in conjunction with the Atomos Ninja V recorder. By connecting to the new Atomos Ninja V+ Recorders, it is even possible to record in 8K ProRes RAW at 30 frames per second. This also allows the white balance and ISO to be changed seamlessly during processing.
Availability of firmware updates
. The firmware updates for the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III are available for download now: here for the Canon EOS R6 and here for the EOS-1D X Mark III. The update for the EOS R5 will be released a bit later in the summer of 2021.
