A small hybrid tripod with a hook is currently being offered on Kickstarter quite literally. As a special and very simple feature, the ViperPod includes a fold-out strut that allows the tripod to be used in a hanging position with its legs retracted.

This can certainly be useful from time to time on uneven ground or for original perspectives; however, we feel a bit uneasy about some of the setups shown depending on where the center of gravity lies, the question remains whether a heavy camera might cause the whole thing to slip. We wouldn't hang anything other than a crash cam in this manner (i.e., unsecured) from trees, railings, or similar structures.
Be that as it may, the ViperPod features a ball head and a side-mounted center column that also serves as a panning handle for video recording the orientation of the head can be adjusted accordingly via a folding mechanism. Mind you, there is no fluid head available for smooth camera movements. In return, the ViperPod allows for quite flexible (and very low-to-the-ground) camera positioning.
The tripod is being produced in two versions. The Light version weighs 950g, slightly less than the "normal" ViperPod at 1.16 kg, and is also more compact. Its maximum working height is approximately 135 cm instead of 157 cm (with the center column extended). The normal ViperPod also supports camera setups weighing up to 8 kg, while the Light model supports 6 kg. However, the ball head itself is generally rated for a load capacity of only 6 kg.
During the crowdfunding campaign which has already exceeded its minimum goal several times over both ViperPods are being offered for pre-order at a discount (with the usual risks), starting at and respectively. The regular retail price for the tripods is set to be and thereafter.
