Cloud workflow optimized: Atomos ATOMOSphere Ground Control: Cloud storage becomes a virtual drive

[16:30 Sat,2.May 2026   by Thomas Richter]

Atomos has introduced "Ground Control," a new desktop app for its ATOMOSphere cloud platform, designed to make accessing cloud-stored media as easy as working with a local hard drive.

Ground Control: The cloud as a virtual drive

The novelty of Ground Control is the direct desktop access to ATOMOSphere projects in the cloud. The app mounts the cloud storage as a virtual drive within the operating system—files appear in Finder or Explorer and can be opened directly in editing software without needing to download them first.

Footage lands in ATOMOSphere via Camera-to-Cloud and then automatically appears on the desktop in the form of proxy files, allowing for immediate editing. The previously common download-upload loop is eliminated. According to Atomos, proxy files are generated automatically, ensuring smooth performance even with large RAW files. Features such as drag-and-drop operation, instant synchronization back to the cloud, and the ability to export media directly from an NLE into Ground Control round out the concept.

ATOMOSphere Editor: Editing directly in the browser

Also new is the ATOMOSphere Editor, launched two months ago—a browser-based editing tool that enables highlight cuts, client versions, or rough cuts directly in the cloud. Colleagues and clients can be invited to shared workspaces to comment, review, or provide approvals live—from anywhere in the world.

What is ATOMOSphere?

Introduced a year ago, ATOMOSphere is Atomos& cloud-based production ecosystem—a combination of online storage, collaboration tools, review and approval functions, and online editing. The platform is not limited to Atomos devices: those using a Ninja or Shogun monitor-recorder can upload footage directly from the set to the cloud—sometimes even while recording is in progress (progressive upload). However, media can also be stored in ATOMOSphere using any memory card or other device.

A free entry-level option is available with 20 GB of storage for all myAtomos members. Paid plans start at /month for 500 GB and go up to /month for 50 TB. Annual plans are more affordable and additionally include discounts of up to 15% in the Atomos webshop. Optional AI features via Axle AI enable automatic scene analysis, object recognition, and speech transcription in 19 languages—allowing large volumes of media to be searched without having to manually tag every clip.
