According to a report in the French magazine Capital, Netflix is in negotiations to buy Luc Bessons film studio EuropaCorp. Following the total flop of the Science-Ficton blockbuster "Valerian", EuropaCorp is in debt for around 285 million euros. Luc Besson (known from films like "Subway", "Nikita", "Léon" or the "Fifth Element") is said to remain the creative head of the studio.
The deal for the studio, which has a stock market value of approximately 79 million euros, may be announced in the next few weeks. Netflix would follow its strategy of investing massive amounts of money in in-house productions and would have its own large production company and studio in the form of the film studio. EuropaCorp has (co-)produced 110 films over the past 20 years and owns a catalogue of over 500 films.
