Electrick: Each surface becomes a touchpad

The touch interface is smart, but the Electrick project of the Future Interfaces Group of the American Carnegie Mellon University turns almost any object into a touchpad with a conductive surface. And also non-conductive surfaces can be made conductive by means of carbon spray, in order to function by touch. Nearly every object - even larger surfaces such as a whole table or a wall (eg for virtual light switches) can be used as an inert control unit. In the demo video it is shown how this works: the surface of a non-conductive object is made conductive by means of a special carbon spray, then electrodes are attached at the edge, alternately two of which are energized alternatelyAnd the others measure the voltage at their location. If a finger touches the surface, the voltage locally changes easily. The 2D position of the finger can thus be determined by means of the measurements of the respectively different voltages during an entire cycle of the electrode generating and measuring electrodes. With a poorer accuracy this works even when touching several fingers (multitouch). The demo clip shows some interesting applications like virtual filters and a volume control,Which can be placed at any point on the conductive surface of a guitar by means of an accompanying app and activated by touch.
