Sony is introducing the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS super-telephoto zoom lens with E-mount for its full-frame cameras of the Alpha series. It is aimed at ambitious amateur users who want to capture distant subjects, such as wildlife photography, sporting events, or similar. Combined with an optional teleconverter, the achievable distance can be doubled—the lens then supports focal lengths of up to 800mm or up to 1,200mm in APS-C mode.

Considering its large telephoto range, the new lens is relatively compact and lightweight, weighing "only" approx. 654g. The price of 899 euros is also comparatively moderate. In exchange, its maximum aperture, among other things, falls short of its focal-length counterpart in the more professional Sony G Master series.
The optical construction featuring 15 elements in 10 groups includes two ED glass elements and two aspherical elements, designed to reduce chromatic aberrations and other optical errors and ensure clear, detailed image performance across the entire zoom range. A circular aperture with nine blades, combined with the optimization of spherical aberrations, is designed to create a natural, soft bokeh.
The zoom lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.86m at the telephoto end and 1.13m at the wide-angle end, as well as a maximum magnification of 0.41x. This also makes it suitable for close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other subjects in the immediate surroundings.
Thanks to a linear motor, the autofocus is designed to operate quickly, precisely, and quietly. In combination with the α9 III full-frame mirrorless camera, the lens supports continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to approx. 120 frames per second.
An integrated optical image stabilization helps reduce blur in handheld shots. Furthermore, the lens supports the Active Mode of the in-camera image stabilization for coordinated stabilization between the camera and the lens. In addition, the Breathing Compensation function of compatible cameras is supported, which compensates for changes in the angle of view caused by focus shifts during video recording.
For convenient operation, it features a customisable focus hold button, a focus mode/focus range switch, and a zoom lock. The dust- and moisture-resistant design is also intended to provide reliability in changing weather conditions, while the included lens hood reduces flare and ghosting.
