In addition to Final Cut Pro 12.3, a new version of the free Final Cut Camera app for iPhone and iPad has been released. It now supports Clean HDMI Out, allowing a clean video signal to be output to external monitors and recorders.
Also new is expanded ProRes support, including ProRes LT. Furthermore, users can now disable digital zoom to ensure that every captured image is recorded at full optical resolution.
However, Final Cut Camera requires an iPhone with iOS 18.6 or later or an iPad with iPadOS 18.6 or later. Expanded ProRes support requires an iPhone 13 Pro or later, while clean HDMI output only works with an iPhone 17 Pro.
What is the Final Cut Camera app?
The Final Cut Camera app has been available since May 2024, originally to support the Live Multicam feature on the iPad, but it can also be used for free as a standalone app for video recording, allowing users to capture video on iPhone and iPad with precise manual controls. Resolution, frame rate, color space, white balance, shutter speed, ISO, and manual focus can all be adjusted; recordings can be monitored live in terms of exposure and levels with the help of zebras and audio status indicators.
Since its launch, the app has been consistently expanded by Apple—for instance, the 2.0 update added features such as ProRes RAW, Genlock, and Open Gate recording.
The app competes with the also free, professional Blackmagic Camera app, which is available for both iPhone and Android.
