Boris FX, known among other things for its VFX tools Sapphire, Continuum, and Mocha Pro, has announced the acquisition of audio specialist iZotope. This expands Boris FX&s portfolio to include, among others, the audio restoration tool RX and the audio mastering tool Ozone, both of which are popular in video post-production. What this means for usersBoris FX founder and CEO Boris Yamnitsky emphasizes in his statement that the company&s product focus will not shift from VFX to audio, but rather be complemented by the new audio editing tools. He specifically mentions the AI expertise of both companies, such as iZotope&s machine learning tools for dialogue repair and mastering, and Boris FX&s AI-powered masking and tracking in Mocha, as well as the prospect of further developments in this area. AI assistants that simplify working with the various tools are also to be expected here.
 Important for iZotope users: all iZotope licenses, subscriptions, and accounts remain active; support and product development (www.izotope.com/community/blog/joining-boris-fx) are expected to continue without interruption. The development teams behind RX, Ozone, Neutron, and Nectar are to be taken over in their entirety, and Chief Product Officer Todd Baker will remain on board. Whether Boris FX will maintain the current model of perpetual and subscription licenses is not yet known—though previous experience with Boris FX acquisitions suggests it will. It remains to be seen, however, how Boris FX will resolve the functional overlap between RX and its own CrumplePop AI audio restoration plugins so as not to make its offerings too confusing for users.  iZotope RX The backstory: a double change of ownershipIt is to be hoped that iZotope has finally arrived in a safe harbor: back in 2021, iZotope was merged with Native Instruments in a deal orchestrated by private equity investor Francisco Partners (temporarily under the "Soundwide" umbrella). In January 2026, Native Instruments filed for preliminary insolvency, and in May, the US hardware group inMusic (Akai, Denon DJ) took over the entire brand portfolio—including iZotope. Just two days after this transaction closed at the end of June, iZotope was spun off again and sold to Boris FX for an undisclosed sum, where it will hopefully find its permanent home. Boris FX on a major shopping spreeFor Boris FX, the acquisition of iZotope is another step in an aggressive expansion strategy—including into the audio segment: It was only in March 2026 that the company acquired (Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro from Magix), and prior to that, the DAWs Sequoia and Samplitude, as well as (the AI audio tools from CrumplePop back in 2023)—the acquisitions of Imagineer, GenArts, and Silhouette FX date back further. A good omen for iZotope: in those cases, the existing products were continued.  iZotope Ozone The iZotope portfolio consists of several programs; the crown jewel is RX, which has been considered the industry standard for audio restoration in film and TV post-production for years and was even awarded an Engineering Emmy in 2019. Its specialty is removing background noise from audio recordings, including dedicated plugins for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, and Pro Tools for specific tasks such as isolating dialogue, removing typical lavalier rustle, wind noise, mouth clicks, and generating room tone. Other iZotope programs include the ADR tool Dialogue Match, the metering plugin Insight, and the mixing and mastering tools Ozone, Neutron, and Nectar.
