Goodbye Intel: Apple heralds the final end of the Intel era with macOS 27

[17:10 Tue,9.June 2026   by Thomas Richter]

At WWDC 2026, Apple opened the final chapter for Intel Macs with macOS 27 "Golden Gate." As previously announced at WWDC 2025, macOS 26 Tahoe has indeed remained the last major system version to run on Intel hardware; macOS 27 is Apple Silicon only. After all, Apple supported the old Intel platform for about 7 years after the release of the last Intel Mac Pro in 2019 — although the latter remained on sale by Apple until 2023. The end of support for Intel apps on Apple Silicon via Rosetta 2 was also announced, though not until the next macOS version.

This is not surprising news—the final end of the Intel era had been looming for some time. And even its last remnant—at least in terms of appearance—the Mac Pro, has recently been officially laid to rest by Apple: Goodbye Cheese Grater: The end of an era — Apple Mac Studio finally replaces Mac Pro.

What does this mean specifically for Intel Mac users?

Anyone still working on an Intel Mac—be it an iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, or the pre-Apple Silicon generation Mac Pro—will no longer receive feature updates via macOS in the future. More problematic for the use of certain programs, however, could be the fact that app developers can now set macOS 27 as a minimum requirement, effectively excluding Intel Macs from new versions with this requirement.

No more Intel apps via Rosetta

For users of legacy Intel apps via Rosetta 2 on new Apple Silicon Macs, another announcement could cause problems: starting with macOS 28, Rosetta 2 is to be largely discontinued. Apple intends to retain only a portion of Rosetta&s functionality to allow old, no-longer-updated games to continue running.

The end of Intel Macs is now the logical conclusion of a transition that has long since been completed. Anyone still using an old Mac for professional work should seriously plan their transition now, as increasing incompatibilities are to be expected. For Apple, the move has certainly paid off: their own chip has not only given Apple independence but also the opportunity to offer systems that are better and more efficient than the competition, thus ushering in a golden era for Apple.
