Last week, ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, unleashed a new version 2.0 of its video AI model Seedance, causing a stir because the quality of the generated clips, including synchronized audio, is at least on par with Google&s Veo. At least in action scenes, Seedance might even have the edge, as these turn out surprisingly realistic compared to what was previously possible. ![]() Among other things, such a generated action scene has now alarmed Hollywood—partly because it clearly demonstrates that video models will indeed be able to calculate competitive images in the future. Perhaps even more infuriating, however, is the fact that Seedance is completely shameless in its disregard for copyright. Famous actors, as well as Marvel characters and the like, can be prompted into existence without any issue. With a simple command, Seedance is said to have created the following scene—two people who look remarkably like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise engaged in a fistfight in front of a sunset.
In another clip, the characters speak with their familiar voices:
The fact that such images can now be generated effortlessly with a few sentences is incredible in itself. Being able to replicate any person, even those who are normally paid for their appearances, shows the danger posed by AI systems—and how difficult it is to enforce existing laws worldwide. The US actors& union SAG-AFTRA, which succeeded in regulating the use of AI in Hollywood (for now) through a long strike, reacted with appropriate horror: "The infringement includes the unauthorized use of our members& voices and likenesses. This is unacceptable and undermines the ability of human actors to earn a living. Seedance 2.0 disregards laws, ethics, industry standards, and fundamental principles of consent. Responsible AI development requires responsibility, which is absent here." The Motion Picture Association has also issued a statement calling on ByteDance to cease these rights infringements, while Disney has sent the company a cease and desist letter for making unauthorized use of its IP. "ByteDance is misusing Disney&s characters by reproducing, distributing, and creating derivative works with these characters," the letter states, demanding that this must stop immediately. OpenAI had acted in a very similar manner at the launch of Sora 2, showing no regard for copyright protection and allowing users to generate images of themselves alongside all sorts of popular characters using the Sora app and post them on Sora&s own social network. Initially, a cheeky opt-out procedure was claimed, where rights holders were supposed to object to the use; fortunately, OpenAI did not get away with this and had to switch to an opt-in system. Whether a Chinese AI operator like ByteDance will similarly concede remains only to be hoped for at this time. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Seedance 2.0 pfeift auf Copyright und generiert Clips mit Stars |
