Filmmakers, editors, photographers, and other creative professionals know the problem: you are looking for footage or image material stored on some old archive hard drive on the shelf. The Mac app "Offline Files," developed by Berlin-based editor and cameraman Paul Kothe, solves this problem: it indexes external drives, network volumes, and selected cloud folders, making them searchable under a single interface—even when the drives in question are not currently connected to the computer. After a successful search, the Offline Files app displays the name of the volume and the file path, showing where and on which hard drive the desired file—or folder—can be found. The app works entirely locally and does not upload any data to the web. It is a pure search and indexing tool for solo editors, small teams, and freelancers who manage their own drives. You can search by file name, path, date, size, type, or media metadata. For photos, thumbnail previews are also displayed, and the "Smart Analyze" function allows you to specifically search for people, animals, or other subjects appearing in images using object recognition.
