Invisible VFX Visible: When You See the Vomit Hose - Embarrassing Mistakes in New 4K Version of Mad Men

[11:03 Tue,9.December 2025   by Thomas Richter]

Mad Men ran from 2007 to 2015 with 7 seasons and is one of the most award-winning series. Since the beginning of December, it has been streaming on HBO MAX in a new 4K version, based on the original material – the first four seasons of Mad Men were shot on film, the last three digitally with the Arri Alexa; the original master was in 1080p/16:9. However, attentive fans like filmmaker Todd Vaziri have found some embarrassing mistakes that crept into the remastering compared to the previous TV and Blu-ray versions.

Perhaps the funniest is found in a well-known scene where one of the advertising executives vomits in front of assembled clients – the new version reveals an unintentional behind-the-scenes look at how the whole thing was executed. In the background, a technician can be seen simulating the vomit using a pump and a hose, and the hose is clearly visible.

Remastering errors in old series have usually been more about important image elements being cropped when reframing classic 4:3 shows to 16:9, but in the remastering of Mad Men, which was already in 16:9, the errors were due to something else. Apparently, the original film material, in which these details had not yet been removed by VFX and no digital warping had been applied to make the vomit appear to come from the mouth rather than the hose, was used in part during the remastering. Instead of the final approved master (with burned-in graphics and comp shots), a pre-VFX/“offline” or raw plate master was used for the 4K workflow in some places.

In other scenes, changes made later are missing – for example, in a street scene, the trash cans typical of 1960s New York have not yet been added to the frame, and the visible neon lights of restaurants have not yet been adapted to the style of the time. Overall, the work seems to have been quite sloppy without thorough final checks – there were even errors in the episode titles and the order, which initially appeared swapped.

In the meantime, most of the discovered errors have at least been corrected. And for the fans, the realization remains that VFX (whether set cleanup, signage replacement, warps, or matte paintings) are ubiquitous even in historical series, but unlike in (SF) or action films, their use tends to remain invisible.
