With "Dark" , Netflix launched its first German-produced "Netflix Originals" series. We are keeping our fingers crossed for her that she will be a success, in order to open up new opportunities outside of public law scenarios for the movers and shakers in Germany. If you look at the power of the trailer&s images, this could also work.
The choice of camera from DP Nikolaus Summerer, who had to comply with Netflix&s strict requirements regarding 4K resolution, is technically interesting. Those who want an "Arri-Look" will only find one single ARRI camera that is approved for Netflix productions: The ARRI ALEXA 65.
Correspondingly, the film was shot on ALEXA 65 - but with "normal" ultra primes - optics with S35 image circle cover that do not cover the full sensor of the ALEXA 65. With a 4.3K Crop, the entire portfolio of ARRI Ultra Primes was available on the one hand, and on the other hand it met the 4K resolution requirements of Netflix including Arri-Look. An interesting setup.
However, it also illustrates what efforts (at least currently) have to be made in order to meet Netflix 4K requirements by ARRI. The Alexa 65 seems to be a bit overkill here.
This scenario calls for an Alexa full-frame camera, which is equipped with at least one full-frame camera. native 4K resolution or higher - probably only a question of when and not of whether or not....
