New Features: RED V-RAPTOR Firmware 2.2.4 brings faster startup, lower power consumption, and more

With the new firmware 2.2.4, RED has released an extensive update for its V-RAPTOR camera series (V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR X, V-RAPTOR XE, and V-RAPTOR XL[X]), which affects several areas including performance, monitoring, broadcast, RED Connect, and virtual production – some of these new features are also coming to the KOMODO-X.

Ready for action faster: Boot time and power consumption

The update shortens the boot time by approximately 40% (up to 8-10 seconds) and also reduces power consumption by up to 5 watts. The reduced power consumption has several positive effects, such as longer battery life and lower heat generation.

Better touchscreen control

Thanks to the new firmware, the stepless ND control via the Smooth-ND function can now be operated directly via the 7" DSMC3 touchscreen – without additional accessories. Furthermore, the assignable buttons on the touchscreen can now be mapped to almost any camera function – including focus and exposure tools – mirroring the user page buttons of the side LCD. This makes the full range of functions available directly on the monitor. Additionally, the focus peaking algorithm has been revised to display focus points more precisely and reliably.

Broadcast: Tally recording and RED Connect for live production

The new firmware makes the V-RAPTOR even more attractive for multi-camera live productions. The new External Tally Recording System links recording start and stop directly to the video switcher&s tally signals: A preview tally starts pre-recording, a program tally starts full recording – when the tally ends, the recording stops automatically. Support for timecode-triggered recording has also been added – ideal for precise synchronization in complex multi-camera setups. RED Connect now supports Broadcast R3D as well as Phantom Track – plus discrete Phantom Track controlling.

Virtual Production: Discrete Phantom Track

There is also an important innovation for virtual production: Discrete Phantom Track. Previously, both Phantom Track channels – one for the final pixel output, one for the greenscreen stream – had to work with an identical shutter angle. From now on, exposure times can be set independently for each track, for example, 180 degrees on Track 1 and 90 degrees on Track 2.
