New compact wireless mic: DJI Mic Mini 2S gets internal 32-bit float recording and 4-channel reception for €189

As DJI itself had already announced, just around 3 months after the rather cosmetic update to the Mic Mini 2, the Mic Mini 2S is now coming to market – and in contrast to its predecessor, it brings two interesting new features that were previously reserved for the significantly more expensive Mic 3: internal 32-bit float recording and the ability to operate up to four transmitters with a single receiver.

From Backup Mic to Standalone Recording Device

Until now, DJI&s mini line was essentially a pure wireless transmission system with no noteworthy independence. With the 2S, each of the weighing-in-at-just-12g wireless mics now gets around 14.5 GB of internal storage, making it capable of recording independently of the receiving device – up to 28 hours in standard 24-bit mode. Also new is the option for 32-bit float, which eliminates the need for gain staging in post-production, especially during unpredictable level spikes – a classic problem in interviews or street polls.

DJI has also stepped up its game in noise cancellation: two AI levels ("Basic" and "Strong"), alongside automatic clipping control and loudness compensation for constant levels during live streams. Three sound profiles (Regular, Bright, Punchy) are designed to deliver usable results without post-processing.

Upgrade: Up to 4 Wireless Mics on One Receiver

For certain recording scenarios, the new 4TX+1RX connectivity should prove interesting. Previously, it maxed out at two transmitters per receiver – for podcasts, roundtable discussions, or small interview setups, one had to resort to the Mic 3 or third-party systems. With the new capability to use 4 Mic Mini 2S wireless mics on a single receiver, the new model matches its arch-rival Insta360&s Mic Pro, which also offers a 4-to-1 mode – though the latter additionally features a 2-to-4 mode for multi-camera productions (where two microphones transmit their signal in parallel to up to four separate receiving devices), which DJI does not (yet) offer.

Swappable Wireless Mic Covers - But Without a Display

As a counter to the major innovation of the Insta360 Mic Pro – the wireless mic&s customisable E-Ink display – DJI is offering the optionally available swappable colored front covers recently introduced with the Mini Mic 2. However, the Mic Pro is, of course, also significantly more expensive than the Mic Mini 2. As before, the Mic Mini 2 microphone can be attached via clip as well as magnetically.

Compatibility and Ecosystem as Trumps

As before, DJI scores points with backward compatibility with its widespread wireless mic systems: Mic Mini 2S transmitters also work with the old Mic Mini receiver, and conversely, older Mic Mini and Mic Mini 2 transmitters can be used with the new receiver. Another important point for many creators: via DJI&s OsmoAudio, the Mic Mini 2S wireless mics also connect to DJI&s compact gimbal cameras and action cams such as the Osmo Pocket 4P/4, Osmo 360, Osmo Nano, and Osmo Action 6, allowing them to be used directly as an audio source without a receiver – an advantage that neither Insta360 nor third-party providers offer, provided you are already using the DJI camera universe.

Availability and Pricing

The DJI Mic Mini 2S is available immediately – the set consisting of two transmitters and one receiver costs 99 euros, with an additional charging case 189 euros. A transmitter including a USB-C phone receiver and a charging case for the transmitter costs 99 euros, a single transmitter 69 euros, the charging case 33 euros, and a set of multi-colored magnetic front covers 19 and 39 euros respectively.

Where Does the Mic Mini 2S Position Itself in the DJI Lineup?

With this, DJI clearly positions the Mic Mini 2S in terms of price and functionality between the Mic Mini 2, which costs 99 euros in the comparable 2x transmitter/receiver/charging case set, and the Mic 3 set for currently 259 euros (which originally launched at a price of 309 euros). However, this price reduction is also necessary, because the 20-euro more expensive Insta360 Mic Pro additionally scores points with its E-Ink display, timecode recording, microphone array, and the resulting selectable polar patterns. The next logical step in the ongoing rivalry between DJI and Insta360 would actually be a stripped-down model of the Mic Pro that also competes with the Mic Mini 2S on price. The gap between the new Mic Mini 2S and the more expensive in-house Mic 3 has shrunk but is still there, as the latter can address up to 8 wireless mics, features lossless transmission via cable, TRS + TRRS connections, and adaptive gain control.
