Canon introduces a new professional camcorder in the XF series. The XF605 features a 1.0-inch type CMOS sensor supported by a DIGIC DV 7 image processor to enable 4K recording at 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit and Full HD at up to 120fps.
The sensor features Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology with EOS iTR AF X, the first in the XF series to implement autofocus with eye and intelligent head detection and tracking. Among other things, this is now designed to keep people in focus when they turn away from the camera.
The touchscreen can be used to directly select the desired persons and objects for focusing. The screen settings, menu navigation and playback can also be controlled by touch. Of course, there are still numerous external control elements on the outer skin for "blind" access when filming.
Recordings are made on 2 SD card slots in various file formats, resolutions and colour scans, and the video signal can be output simultaneously via HDMI or 12G-SDI.
The integrated 15x zoom lens carries a red premium L-series label and offers an extended zoom of 30x in Full HD. The exact focal length goes from 8.3 to 124.5 mm, which is an equivalent 35mm focal length of 25 - 375 mm with an estimated 1 inch sensor cropfactor of 3. The starting aperture ranges from 1:2.8 to 1:4.5, and three lens rings allow direct manual control of aperture, focal length and focus.
The 5-axis image stabiliser is derived from the Canon XF and XA series, offering different IS modes (Standard, Dynamic, Powered IS). The XF605&s DIGIC DV 7 offers a range of image options, including HDR (HLG/PQ), Canon Log3 and custom Look Files.
Besides the official XLR audio inputs (incl. manual sound control), the new multifunctional accessory shoe sounds quite exciting. This is also open to third-party manufacturers. For example, a high-resolution XLR microphone adapter from TEAC (CA-XLR2d-C), which expands the XF605 to 4 audio channels, will be available at market launch.
Also important in the meantime is the deeper support of multiple live/IP streaming protocols as well as the direct use of the cameras as a UVC webcam via USB-C.
The XF605 is said to weigh only about 2kg, making it about ten per cent smaller and 600 grams lighter than the XF705.
The XF605 is expected to be available from October 2021 at a price of €4,759 including VAT.
