AI or Small Potatoes? Micron to Discontinue Crucial Business for Private Customers by End of February 2026. High demand for AI memory solutions is forcing the company to set new priorities and sideline the Crucial brand, which is popular with many PC enthusiasts. The company instead wants to focus on more profitable areas such as High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) as well as enterprise SSDs and DRAM for data centers and business customers. ![]() Micron is discontinuing the Crucial memory brand for private customers Micron cites several reasons for this move: Low Margins: Consumer products like memory modules and SSDs are Micron&s lowest-margin products in a price-sensitive market. Enormous AI Demand: Data centers for Artificial Intelligence require enormous amounts of memory capacity. Any production capacity used for private customers is unavailable for these lucrative large orders. High Fixed Costs: Even a scaled-down consumer business requires complex infrastructure (development, sales, support) that is barely profitable with declining unit volumes. It is therefore strategically more sensible for Micron to concentrate capacity and resources entirely on high-performance products for the enterprise sector. The Crucial brand will be discontinued but not sold. This leaves a low probability of receiving new Crucial memory again should the AI bubble ever truly burst. However, one should not expect bargains during the Crucial clearance sale given the current memory shortage. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Bye Bye Crucial - Micron stellt Speichergeschäft für Privatkunden ein |
