Oscars 2021: Best Documentary, International Feature Film Selection a.o. presented ...
After the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science adopted new inclusion rules for the 2024 Oscars (whose goal - to ensure more diversity in film production - we expressly welcome), there were already some changes in store for this year&s Oscars - which this time, however, were more due to the constraints of the corona pandemic.
Although the Oscars had already been postponed to a later date, as is well known, rather few films made it into the cinemas last year. Therefore, this year the Academy also admitted productions from streaming services that did not have a theatrical premiere (but had a corresponding performance planned).
In addition, the shortlist for Best International Feature Film was expanded from 10 to 15 as well as the votes of the smaller International Film Executive Committee were abolished this year, which until now could still independently add another 3 films to the shortlist. To the best of our knowledge, the IFE Committee used to have a kind of wildcard/correction function to put films on the shortlist that were not considered or simply overlooked by the main committee (staffed according to film industry).
Be that as it may, the international critics do not seem to miss the IFE Committee&s intervention very much so far.
We have not yet seen many of the films on the shortlists and are therefore unable to make a personal judgement on the selection. We were pleased to see that the small but fine story "My Octopus Teacher" by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed made it onto the shortlist. (If you&re in the mood for an extraordinarily interesting and at the same time moving animal documentary - definitely check it out).
Here are all the shortlists published so far for the 2021 Oscars, on which unfortunately no German production is represented:
