Orico has introduced two new models for its MetaBox series of network-attached storage devices, specifically tailored to the needs of photo and video production. The major innovation is the integration of M.2 NVMe SSD slots into a classic hard drive enclosure, offering high storage capacity combined with high access speeds for video editing as needed. Hybrid Storage Architecture for Video EditingThe essential feature of the MetaBox models is the possibility of hybrid drive configuration. While conventional NAS systems in this segment often rely exclusively on SATA hard drives, the Metabox HS200 and HS500 feature two additional M.2 NVMe SSD slots, supporting SSDs with capacities of up to 8 TB each. ![]() Orico MetaBox HS200 and HS500 This hybrid configuration enables two usage scenarios: the SSDs can either be configured as a fast cache to accelerate the read and write operations of the mechanical hard drives or serve as independent high-speed storage. For video editors, this means higher performance, for example, when scrubbing the timeline, as access times are significantly reduced compared to pure HDD systems. ![]() Orico MetaBox Interfaces and InternalsThe Metabox connects to PCs either via the network using two 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (practically 290 MB/s each), which can also be bundled to achieve double the bandwidth, or directly via USB4, offering higher speeds of up to 5 GB/s. Inside the Metabox operates a quad-core Intel Celeron series processor, standardly equipped with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be expanded up to 32 GB via two slots. This can be useful when multiple users access the system simultaneously or when memory-intensive applications like Docker containers are run, as the file system used (ZFS) aggressively utilizes RAM as a cache. The MetaBox can also be used as a kind of private cloud for all devices, not only within the local network but also encrypted worldwide via the internet. CyberData OSThe Metabox runs on Orico&s self-developed "CyberData OS," which is based on the ZFS file system, specifically tailored for NAS systems and considered particularly robust against silent data corruption (bit rot) due to its continuous integrity checks. CyberData OS also supports Docker applications and features multi-user permissions and flexible access controls to allow teams finely controlled access to data. ![]() Orico MetaBox Software features of CyberData OS include:- Snapshot Management: Allows restoration of previous file versions after accidental deletion or errors. - AI-powered tools for automated organization of image material, including semantic search functions. - SDVN Technology: An encryption technology designed to secure remote access without routing data through third-party servers. To integrate into studio setups, the MetaBox series features a minimalist design in a full aluminum enclosure. Orico offers the MetaBox in two variants, both shipping immediately: - MetaBox HS200: Offers space for two SATA hard drives (3.5 or 2.5 inches) and two M.2 NVMe SSDs for . - MetaBox HS500 (Pro): Features five SATA bays and also two M.2 NVMe SSD slots for . deutsche Version dieser Seite: Orico MetaBox vorgestellt - hybrides NAS für Festplatten und NVMe SSDs speziell für C |
