Insta360 has finally officially unveiled its new gimbal camera, which has been teased for some time—even before its competitor, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. The Luna Ultra is Insta360&s first gimbal camera and bears a strong resemblance to the well-established DJI Osmo Pocket series. However, two innovations stand out: the dual camera module featuring a wide-angle and a telephoto lens, and the detachable display with controller, which can also be used as a remote control.  Insta360 Luna Ultra The dual camera moduleAt the heart of the device is the new dual camera module, developed with the assistance of Leica—just like the Insta360 Ace Pro action cam. It consists of a wide-angle 1" main camera with a Leica Summicron 220 mm full-frame equivalent and f/1.8 aperture. This is complemented by a telephoto camera with a 1/1.3" sensor, 60 mm full-frame equivalent, and f/2.0 aperture. Insta360 mentions five practical focal lengths or zoom levels. According to the manufacturer, the zoom range extends from 1x, 2x, 3x, 6x (120mm) to 12x (240mm), with lossless zoom reportedly possible up to 6x. The Luna Ultra records video at up to 8K at a maximum of 30 fps. In addition to the classic 16:9 format, a 2.35:1 mode with 7,680 × 3,264 pixels is also supported. In 4K, up to 120 fps is possible, also available in either 16:9 or 2.35:1. For square or vertical social media formats, 3K modes in 1:1 and 9:16 are available. Full HD recording is possible at up to 240 fps. Recording is done in the MP4 container with H.265/HEVC and a maximum bitrate of 120 Mbit/s. For photos, the camera offers up to 37 MP in UltraPhoto mode as well as JPEG+RAW.  Insta360 Luna Ultra dual camera For post-production, the Luna Ultra supports 10-bit I-Log—which is natively supported by DaVinci Resolve, for example—with (according to Insta360) 14 stops of dynamic range. Standard profiles and Dolby Vision are also available. Insta360 also mentions ACES compatibility for professional color grading workflows. In addition to the technical color profiles, there are several Leica looks, including Leica Natural, Leica Chrome, Leica Vivid, and various film emulations. Internal recording or microSDInternally, the Luna Ultra offers 47 GB of usable storage, expandable via microSD up to 1 TB. For the highest bitrates, V30- or V90-certified cards are recommended to avoid dropped frames. Data transfer via cable is handled via USB-C 3.0, and Wi-Fi 6 is available for wireless transfer. The display is also a remote control and wireless microphoneThe second major feature of the Insta360 Luna Ultra is the rotatable 2" OLED touch display, which—along with a small mount that also houses buttons and a zoom rocker—can be detached and used separately as a remote control with a live image preview. It supports HD video transmission from the camera at a distance of up to 20 meters.  Insta360 Luna Ultra display The detachable module also contains its own microphone. This allows the display module to be positioned closer to the speaker during interviews, for example—acting as a wireless microphone—while the camera is mounted on a tripod. Additionally, two transmitters from the Insta360 Mic series—such as the Mic Air or Mic Pro—can be connected directly to the camera.  Insta360 Luna Ultra display as remote control Four-microphone arrayAudio recording is performed at 48 kHz and natively at 32-bit in AAC format. Insta360 lists audio modes including wind noise reduction, voice enhancement, and original sound. The Luna Ultra is said to support native 32-bit audio—a capability previously rarely found in cameras in this price range. The entire audio system of the Luna Ultra is based on a four-microphone array: three microphones are located in the camera body itself, and the fourth is in the detachable display. AI-supported processing and NPU-based noise reduction are intended to ensure consistent audio quality even in changing environments, while internal audio recording serves as an additional safeguard if transmission conditions become difficult. Built-in timecode also enables multi-camera synchronization. Triple-AI for better low-light shotsA so-called Triple-AI chip system is designed to accelerate the Luna Ultra&s image processing and improve image quality in low light. According to Insta360, two dedicated imaging chips handle tasks related to low-light image quality, while an additional 4nm AI chip is responsible for further AI functions.  PureVideo mode The PureVideo mode, specialized for low light, reduces image noise, increases brightness and shadow detail, and is available up to 4K at 60 fps. Additionally, the Luna Ultra offers portrait functions that detect faces, optimize skin tones, and enable more natural close-ups directly from the camera. For portraits in low light, Insta360 also points to a separately available mini fill light. Tracking and intelligent shooting modesDeep Track 5.0 is used for subject tracking. The subject can be selected via joystick or touchscreen; the camera then automatically keeps it in the center of the frame. Insta360 also mentions group tracking and active zoom tracking. Creative modes include Video, PureVideo, Slow Motion, Timelapse, TimeShift, and Barrel Roll. For photos, Standard and UltraPhoto modes, Live Frame, and panoramas are available. Timecode is also integrated for multi-camera workflows with programs like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro. Data transfer to a computer is via USB-C 3.0. Wirelessly, the Luna Ultra uses Wi-Fi 6, while the detachable touchscreen module operates via Wi-Fi 4. Bluetooth BR/EDR/BLE is also supported.  I-Log in DaVinci Resolve The main grip contains a 1,550 mAh battery, and the detachable display module contains a 210 mAh battery. Insta360 states a maximum runtime of up to 240 minutes, though this is under laboratory conditions at 1080p/24fps with the display turned off and Wi-Fi disabled. Using USB-C PD fast charging, the camera can be charged back to 80 percent in about 23 minutes.  Prices and bundlesInsta360 offers the Luna Ultra in several packages. The Standard Pack costs 729 euros and includes the camera, a protective cover, a wind muff, a 1/4" threaded grip, and a wrist strap. Other bundles are aimed at creators, vloggers, POV users, or users with longer runtime requirements. Depending on the package, items such as a carrying case, battery grip, Mic Pro or Mic Air transmitter, wide-angle lens, black mist filter, POV head tracker, or neck mount are included.
