Robot Phone with LogC3: The Honor ARRI smartphone with an integrated mini-gimbal is coming on August 12th

The Honor Robot Phone, announced in March (www.slashcann.de/news/single/Honor-Robot-Phone---erstes-Smartphone-mit-integrie-19842.html), is taking more concrete shape. The smartphone with a fold-out gimbal is set to launch on August 12th (though it remains unclear whether this will initially be in China only or worldwide). Further details regarding the camera and stabilization were recently revealed by the manufacturer ahead of time at an Imaging Technology Launch Event.

ARRI was also on hand because, as is well known, camera technology from Munich will be incorporated into the Robot Phone as a second unique selling point. According to Harald Brendel, the "core elements of ARRI Image Science" being integrated directly into a consumer device for the first time consist of ARRI LogC3 combined with ARRI Wide Gamut 3 (as the color space) and ARRI Looks.

New H1 Imaging SoC


The 23mm main camera with an f/1.6 aperture, housed within the gimbal, utilizes a 1/1.28-inch type sensor with 200MP. In addition, the Robot Phone features a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a periscope telephoto module, which are integrated quite traditionally into the smartphone body. Honor unfortunately did not disclose the exact sensor used in the main camera—not an uninteresting question, since even the best (ARRI) color science cannot go very far with insufficient image data. In the recently introduced Osmo Pocket 4P, DJI specifically relies on a new Sony CMOS with LOFIC and Triple Conversion Gain HDR technology, enabling unprecedented dynamic range in small sensors. Since the Robot Phone's image sensor was not highlighted, it is likely nothing quite as sensational.

However, Honor has developed its own AI-assisted imaging SoC, the H1, and claims to achieve a dynamic range of 14 stops thanks to support for ARRI LogC3, along with an 8dB improvement in the image signal-to-noise ratio. Energy efficiency is said to be 18.8 TOPS/W. Furthermore, AiMAGE 2.0 is a real-time image processing system designed to manage white balance, exposure, tone control, and highlight reduction on the fly. Professional exposure features, such as False Color, also appear to be integrated.



Shrunken Gimbal Technology


The imaging chip is also directly coupled with the small gimbal motor, which, according to Honor, weighs only 2.6 grams and is 65 percent smaller than other gimbal drives while offering 35 percent higher torque density. It is precisely this miniaturization that makes the integration of a gimbal into a smartphone possible.

In addition to mechanical stabilization via a true gimbal—previously, smartphone manufacturers meant gyro-data processing when advertising "gimbal stabilization"—the gimbal can also be used as a "camera robot" thanks to AI-based subject recognition and automatic tracking, for example, when taking selfies with the smartphone mounted on a small tabletop tripod. This is also the origin of its name: the Robot Phone.

A somewhat bizarre gimmick of the gimbal camera can be admired in the promo video: the movable camera head provides feedback through movement. The smartphone robot is capable of "nodding," shaking its "head," or even "dancing" to music.



This unquestionably innovative device thus merges quite diverse elements: Honor is clearly targeting the large market for gimbal cameras à la the DJI Osmo Pocket, adding playful (one might also say silly) features, yet at the same time creating the first "ARRI smartphone," harboring somewhat professional ambitions. The collaboration between Honor and ARRI is specifically promoted in this video.



To what extent Log-C at the smartphone sensor level can actually be practically integrated into professional grading pipelines, or whether it merely serves as a decorative selling point, will only become clear after thorough testing.
