Micron is the first manufacturer to not only announce but also already produce an NVMe SSD with a PCIe 6.0 interface. The fastest SSDs to date had already hit the speed limit of PCIe 5.0 x4, theoretically 15.75 GB/s or practically around 14,900 MB/s, and thus could not get any faster. ![]() Micron 9650 SSD However, by using PCIe 6.0, new speed records are now possible because it nearly doubles the bandwidth available for data transfer compared to PCIe 5.0. And indeed, thanks to PCIe 6.0, the Micron 9650 achieves a phenomenal sequential read speed of up to 28,000 MB/s, making it not only about twice as fast as previous top models but also already utilizing the full bandwidth of PCIe 6.0 (via 4 lanes). In terms of sequential writing, however, it is still far from this and is limited not by the interface but by its "insides," meaning the fact that writing to NAND flash memory chips is always more complex and thus slower than reading. Nevertheless, at 14,000 MB/s, it is almost as fast as the fastest PCIe 5.0 SSD, the Corsair MP700 PRO XT. ![]() Micron 9650 SSD Performance But a maximum read speed was also the goal of Micron&s development, as it is entirely focused on AI, or more precisely, on training and inference. During training, GPUs constantly need to read new data batches from memory/storage, otherwise, they wait and don&t compute. During inference—the normal operation of an AI, answering prompts—model weights and additional context/retrieval material must be read very quickly so that responses are possible without delay. For maximum performance, the Micron 9650 supports cooling not only via air but also via liquid. ![]() Micron 9650 SSD And with that, the big drawback has been mentioned—besides the fact that there are no mainstream motherboards or PCs with PCIe 6.0 on the market yet: the Micron 9650 SSD is only available to large customers like hyperscalers. According to insiders, it could even take until 2030 for PCIe 6.0 NVMe SSDs for regular PCs to arrive. But it at least shows the next generational leap that will eventually reach ordinary (professional) users. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Micron 9650 ist die erste PCIe 6.0 SSD - und kratzt schon am Speed-Limit |
