OWC has introduced a new 8 TB model for its line of portable Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSDs. Thanks to its Thunderbolt 5 interface, it is now the fastest mobile SSD with a continuous read speed of over 6,000 MB/s. The write speed is also initially expected to be over 6,000 MB/s, but will be lower for longer operations—OWC cites 1,700 MB/s for the 4 TB model, and the new 8 TB variant will likely be slightly faster than that. ;) OWC 8TB Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5
The OWC Envoy Ultra does not require an additional external power source; it is supplied with the necessary energy via its Thunderbolt 5 connection. Thanks to its fanless, heat-dissipating aluminum enclosure, it is extremely quiet during operation. Its Thunderbolt 5 port (with a maximum of 80 Gbit/s or 10,000 MB/s) is backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 as well as USB 4, all of which will act as bottlenecks, reducing the transfer speed to their respective maximums (2,800 or 3,000 MB/s maximum). The OWC 8TB Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 is compatible with Windows, Mac, Chrome, iPad Pro, and Surface devices and connects to the host system via its integrated Thunderbolt 5 cable. To minimize damage during transport or daily work, it features an IP67-rated dust- and shock-resistant enclosure.
