The winners of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025, Sony&s international short film competition for emerging filmmakers, were announced at an awards ceremony. They were selected by a high-profile jury including filmmakers Minhal Baig ("We Grown Now") and Jason Reitman ("Saturday Night"), President of 3000 Pictures Elizabeth Gabler, and director Justin Chadwick ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"). ;) Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025
In four competition categories, awards were given to works that set new narrative and technical standards in the field of short film. The awards, supported by Sony and organized by Creo, promote creative talent worldwide – with a special focus on new perspectives and technically sophisticated implementations. The winning films: Fiction: "My Demon" by Rossana Montoya (Colombia)A special feature of "My Demon" is the decision to tell the entire 17-minute plot in a single, uncut shot. This one-take technique places high demands on camera work, choreography and acting – aspects that Montoya and her team implement with remarkable precision. The static camera work becomes a narrative tool that transports the emotional escalation between the characters in real time. Non-Fiction: "Travelling Home" by Juliet Klottrup (UK)Klottrup&s documentary relies on 16mm film and deliberately uses the graininess of the analog material to create authenticity and temporal depth. The choice of this medium contrasts with today&s dominant digital documentary aesthetic and draws attention to a traditional cinematic craft that is atmospherically condensed and decelerated at the same time. Animation: "Hermanos Casablanca" by Santiago O&Ryan & José Navarro (Chile)The Chilean entry combines somber color palettes with an animated style that oscillates between realism and symbolism. Visually, the film stands out due to its reduced but expressive design, which reinforces the political theme of repression and loss in the context of the Pinochet dictatorship. Here, animation does not serve playfulness, but rather distancing and reflection. Student: "Rock Paper Scissors" by Hayder Hoozeer & Franz Böhm (UK/Germany)This work impresses with its intense color dramaturgy and deliberately used spatial restrictions. The claustrophobic staging is used not only dramatically but also creatively to build psychological tension. Clear influences of immersive cinema are visible in the camera work, where the line between viewer and action deliberately blurs. ;) Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025 Insight and Outlook: The Role of Technological AdvancementThe winners received not only prize money, but also modern equipment from the Sony Digital Imaging portfolio. This practice-oriented funding aims to facilitate access to high-quality production technology and increase creative freedom through technological independence. At the same time, participants were given an in-depth insight into professional production processes during a multi-day workshop at the Sony Pictures Studios.
