The Japanese audio recorder specialist Zoom has introduced the TCA-1, a compact timecode adapter that provides compatible Zoom recorders with precise timecode functionality, replacing the previous, rather cumbersome method via the BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter.

The 40 g lightweight Zoom TCA-1 connects directly to a recorder via its remote port. Through the 3.5 mm TRS jack of the TCA-1, timecode can be both input and output, allowing easy synchronization with cameras, external timecode generators, clapperboards, and video mixers. Since the Zoom TCA-1 uses the open de facto standard LTC (Linear Timecode) via a 3.5 mm jack, it is generally compatible with common timecode generators, for example from Tentacle Sync or Deity.

The core of the TCA-1 is a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), which, according to Zoom Corporation, ensures an accuracy of 0.5 frames over 24 hours. For shooting days without an external reference, this is a solid value that should result in only minimal drift over the course of a day even without re-jamming.

The practical benefit is obvious: anyone who integrates timecode cleanly into their workflow saves the time-consuming manual alignment of audio tracks via waveform in post-production and can start editing right away. The following Zoom recorders are supported: H6studio, H5studio, H6essential, H4essential, H2essential, and F3. Important: the latest firmware version is required to use the TCA-1. Simultaneous use with the BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter is not possible.

Price

The Zoom TCA-1 is now available for pre-order from specialist retailers at a price of around 65 euros (significantly more than the old BTA-1 adapter).
