At the turn of the year there are more and more reviews of the "best" of the past year -- be it films, new cameras, images captured with cameras, effect sequences or much more. The title opening credits are also very suitable for such a ranking; although one´s own aesthetic feeling inevitably plays a role in the evaluation, it´s also about how well a titling fits in with the following film or TV series, whether one is curious or drawn into it, whether the design is original -- and last but not least, whether it somehow "rocks".
In its list of the best title sequences from 2018, the website Art of the Title has awarded first place (for the first time) to the opening credits of a German series: Babylon Berlin. It had its premiere in Germany in 2017, but was only available internationally since last January via Netflix. The hypnotic opening credits in art deco look were designed by Saskia Marka. The American TV series Counterpart is in second place, the Russian series Domashniy arest in third.
Unfortunately, only the few titles in the Top 10 list are included as clips; we were able to find some more, but unfortunately not Babylon Berlin of all places, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is missing as well. Two of the titlings in the list are by the way not film but conference opening credits.
