Under 1.5 kg: LG announces lightest 17-inch RTX laptop 17Z90UR - for now only in the USA

LG announces what it claims is the lightest 17-inch laptop with RTX graphics at CES 2026. In recent years, the manufacturer has already built numerous notebooks in the renowned Gram series, which were characterized by an outstanding weight-to-size ratio. However, this lightweight construction often came at a price: Some models were repeatedly criticized for not matching the stability and rigidity of devices in solid aluminum casings. In particular, the display lid hinge seemed too flexible to many users when opening or with light touches.

LG now aims to solve this fundamental problem with a newly developed material called "Aerominum." The company promises that the material will not only lead to further reduced weight but also to a significantly more robust and stiffer construction. Scratch resistance and structural integrity have been substantially improved.

The flagship of this new era is the upcoming 17-inch model 17Z90UR. It is expected to definitely remain under the 1.479-kilogram mark (the weight of its predecessor) while still housing a dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 graphics card. This card comes with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory connected via a 128-bit interface (approx. 320 GB/s bandwidth) and a computing power of about 13 FP32 Teraflops. This positions the laptop not only as a mobile office and multimedia device but also as a mobile workstation for creative tasks. Under demanding, GPU-heavy effects in programs like DaVinci Resolve, its performance could be ranked between an Apple MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip and an M3 Max chip.

However, this 17Z90UR model, with its 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display, will initially be exclusive to the North American market. For Europe, the "Aerominum Gram" therefore remains primarily an indication of the direction things are heading.

Perhaps as small consolation, the new 16-inch model 16Z90U will be available in this region. LG highlights a 2,880 x 1,800 pixel OLED display as its main feature, which should ensure deep blacks and vibrant colors. The core component will be one of the latest Intel Core Ultra processors from the "Panther Lake" generation.
