With intermediate codec can flip it. I cut this with the Canopus HQ codec problems on an Athlon-3500-system (, 2.2 GHz).
Maybe there is the Cineform codec, a trial version with which you can try it?
Render to which format you want, is for the cut really unimportant.
But if you only SD s.end definitely need quality, you could have the material before cutting in SD (; including MPEG-2 or convert DV) and the HD to avoid problems altogether.
