Infoseite // Digitizing VHS to miniDV?

Frage von Serdna:

Hi,

For a professional documentary, we have about 100 hours of VHS capture material. The incision is made in Avid Media Composer 5th I actually thought we could have a direct VHS with the Avid Mojo (which is available to us) or with a Canopus capture. Now tell me but the post-production, that they recommend the VHS to play first on miniDV and only then to capture on the PC. This means the double, tedious work. I can also provide the benefits, understand about playing it first on miniDV not.
Does anyone have experience with this workflow? What would you think are the best quality and quantity? What compression you can recommend for the VHS format.
I would look forward to your answers.

So I do not see any difference whether I was on tape or hard drive to play, except that I can barter with the tape also drop outs which I only later realize because CAMs've no check recorded, the editing program, but in such a case, stops, or at least dropred Frame displays.

Antwort von Bernd E.:

The usual way would be the VHS material to DV-AVI convert to (the format that would be synonymous recorded on MiniDV) and, as such, it equal to play in the calculator. An actual recording on tape and then capture of these would only bring more work out of nothing - certainly not a better quality anyway.

DV-AVI.
I think that says "post production" synonymous with "miniDV. So do not store them in a more lossy format such as MPEG2. Of course it is nonsense if the file is first stored on DV tape and then transferred to the calculator.
The quality is much more important, the AD converter. A Canopus ADVC here brings significantly better results than a camcorder's AV input.
