I think that mean that you can exchange the viewfinders.
You can get a viewfinders in S / W purchase and exchange ... but it is quite Tauer.

Viewfinder XL1S in white on black switch The linked article is a preliminary report, written at a time when the XL1S has not been on the market. As a reason for the apparently false information with the switchable viewfinders, I could imagine two things:
1. The author has encountered a volatile read the manual, the setting for the color display viewfinder performanceim for a switch to black on hold.
