DVL-Digest 1080 - Postings: Index About the history of tape-OT!!! Widescreen mpeg2 from Premiere About the history of tape-OT!!! - "Perry Mitchell" From: Jeffrey Borinsky Please forgive me if I'm writing BS from the wrong side of the pond. My understanding is that NTSC subcarrier must be an odd multiple of half line frequency to minimise dot crawl. The value chosen was: Fsc = 455/2 * Fh When this was tried with the original 60Hz field rate, the beat frequency between the NTSC subcarrier at about 3.58MHz and the intercarrier sound at 4.5MHz turned out to be a problem. They did not want to move the sound carrier since this would cause incompatibility with monochrome sets. There was one obvious answer - change the field, line and subcarrier rates slightly to minimise he problem. Hence 30Hz became 29.97Hz. And this has caused grief ever since time code was invented! Most of this theory (and much more besides) is covered in "Colour Television, The NTSC System Principles and Practice" by Carnt and Townsend. This was a classic book about NTSC from the British perspective published in 1961. I bet Perry Mitchell has a copy too. PS: This is not the only historic decision to cause trouble. Think how much easier life would now be without interlace! 20:20 hindsight again. For the benefit of good international relations I'll try not to mention SECAM:-) Widescreen mpeg2 from Premiere - "Perry Mitchell" From: Enrico Quaglia Hello folks, I've just subscribed back after 6 months, so please excuse me if this has been, dealt with before. I'm desperately searching for an mpeg2 encoder that will support widescreen (1024 X 576) frames. I promised to burn a DVD in widescreen format that was shot in 16:9 for Xmas, but my current encoder (Canopus software) will only handle normal 720 X 576 PAL resolution. Sure I could letterbox it, but I'd like to hand the project in full 16:9 screen. To top things off, this encoder should ideally work directly from Premiere. I'm desperate, this video was meant as an Xmas present :-(( Cheers, Enrico Turin - Italy (diese posts stammen von der DV-L Mailingliste - THX to Adam Wilt and Perry Mitchell :-) [up] |
