63 vs 83 minutes tapes... - Jon Burkhart

I would use it only when you have a real need. I have not had
any problem with the 80's I have, but use them only when
necessary. I've used several to store edited programs that
run over an hour and won't fit on a 63 minute reel.
The extra length can be a great help when you're recording
live performances and don't want to change tape so often. .
.or if you're trying to make it to intermission for a reel
change.

Avid ExpressDV: Opinions? - Adam Wilt

The problem with this and similar work-arounds using the video-out port on
laptops and dualhead cards of all stripes is that it only LOOKS like
you're seeing WYSIWYG video. What you actually get is an RGB
computer-monitor image scan-converted to video, without many YUV "illegal
colors" or superwhite excursions, and without the original field
interlacing (you'll get an onscreen display of the two fields interlaced,
but the asynchronous scan-conversion back to video won't respect the video'
s vertical interval). The color rendering is also unlikely to match the
final, rendered video.
As a result what you'll see on the video monitor looks both better (fewer
illegal colors and levels) and worse (torn frames, stuttery playback) than
the real thing. It's not a good guide for what the real thing will look
like.

Can't say. My G4/450 running 10.1.4 and FCP 3.0 captures from a DHR-1000,
VX1000, and PD150 with no problems at all, just like it does in 9.2.2.

BTW, if you set scratch to a removable disk (like a docking bay drive or a
FireWire drive), and then restart FCP when that drive isn't available, FCP
will *silently* revert back to the system drive. Yes, the FCP guys know
that it's a bug... ;-)

IBM drives - Jon Burkhart

It's a 7200 that I'm just now finishing up editing a 1 hr & 48
minute program shot on location with two synced cameras. The
disk is about 2/3rds full. It's been running constantly for a
week. It has performed flawlessly.
I have a dataport system so it's easy to swap hard drives. To
edit this project I needed the extra storage fast. I ran down
to Costco and picked up this Maxtor for US.

NBC Goes DV Continued - "Crittenden, Jan"

George wrote: I was just suprised that they went with
DV25/MiniDV instead of a DV50 or a 2 + hour tape dv camera .
George, et al, NBC has as its standard format DVCPRO and DVCPRO50, depending
on market, then as an additional move to get more cameras in the field, they
are doing like New York One and CNN has done and that is to deploy DV
Camcorders to fill in the Stringers. The stations are not converting to DV
they are DVCPRO or DVCPRO50, the DV tapes play in these machines. It is a
test to expand the number of cameras on the street.

on camera light for pd150 - Jon Burkhart

I hear the frezzi is an excellent light, but haven't used one
in many, many years.
I currently use the NRG VariLux. You can get wide angle bulbs
that do pretty well when you're in close. It has a dimmer
built in that allegedly does not turn the light red when it
dims, but it DOES somewhat at very low light levels.
At the low light levels used with today's cameras you really
need the ability to dim the light so as not to over-power the
available light.

If you were to have read the immediately following paragraphs...
___
Huh? Remember, I said "at NBC." NBC and their partners in crime will be
using proper, broadcast/professional NTSC DVCPRO and DVCAM decks. Such
decks have, buried in their menus, the option to "add setup". In Japan and
Korea, that setting is properly turned off. In the USA, that setting
should be on. By the same token the better camcorders offer "add setup"
switches in their menus for their analog outputs.
A similar setting removes setup on incoming analog signals; it should be
on in the new world, off in the exotic east.
Now, the Rest of Us may be using lower end gear: DSR-20s, DSR-11s, PD150s,
even (shudder) consumer gear. None of these low-end decks and camcorders
have "add setup."
___
...it would all have been clear.
Of course John now tells us that NBC is following CNN and the Beeb and
getting PD150s so I may have to change my example network! :-)
Cheers,
AJW

XDV 3 workaround - "Valerie Shoaps"

I suspect that he didn't recommend it because it's not NTSC color accurate. Nice for cutting, but not for color correction. The method is described in the manual or "What's New" docs.
